If you think small dogs barking like crazy can give their owners headaches, wait till you hear the complaints from owners of big dogs. When your dog tends to start barking, and gets difficult to slow down and stop, that’s a problem. When you have a couple of big dogs that’s this troublesome, you risk complaints from your neighbours and waking up in the middle of the night due to barks. As with many dog owner, you want your dog’s unwanted behaviour to be curbed, permanently. You will find many bark collars available, in pet stores, and online, and ones especially for big dogs who just won’t listen. One of the best ways to curb excessive barking is through the use of static collars.

From experience, dog trainers know that not every dog can be shaped in the same way and at the same rate by any behavioural training. Large dogs fit this criterion – as there have been dogs who can endure and even ignore corrective shocks provided by static collars. And because of the capacity of dogs to adjust, many static collars come with intensity adjustment features. In time, you’ll discover the right setting, or intensity, that is enough to stop your dog from barking. If the stimulus – a stray cat in the bush or a loud truck – is present, and your dog is as meek as a cat, you should also reward it with attention, play time, and treats. You want to get across a clear stand on the matter – loud, excessive barking is not something you approve of.

Your dog will show signs of irritability, or unease, should the collar be ill-fitting; so make sure you get one that can fit his neck well, and comfortably. This is to make sure your dog will not be irritated by the unit, and so avoids subjecting the unit to wear and tear. You will want to ask about collars for big dogs, and about shock collars, in particular, when you visit a pet shop near where you live.

Ask about the mechanism’s trigger in the collar’s unit – how it is activated. When choosing among bark collars, go for a model with a mechanism that will release a static correction only after your dog actually barked, and not due to some loud sound in the environment. This is to ensure that only your dog’s bark triggers the shock. You want a collar that’s smart enough to tell if the bark was indeed a bark, and not some loud sound in the background. What’s vital is that your dog learns to link the shock as a consequence of his barking. As a final note, it’s advisable to choose collar that’s waterproof, since you don’t want some rain, puddle, or accident getting the mechanism of the collar wet and therefore ruined.
